Centre for Environment Education (CEE)

Organisation: Centre for Environment Education (CEE) was established in August 1984 as a Centre of Excellence supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. CEE, a national institution with its headquarters in Ahmedabad, has a mandate to promote environmental awareness nationwide.

CEE is affiliated to the Nehru Foundation for Development and inherits the rich multi- disciplinary resource base and varied experience of Nehru Foundation for Development.       

CEE is committed to ensuring that due recognition is given to the role of EE in the promotion of sustainable development. CEE develops innovative programmes and educational material, and builds capacity in the field of education and communication for sustainable development. It undertakes demonstration projects in education, communication and development that endorse attitudes, strategies and technologies that are environmentally sustainable.

Principles: CEE’s mission is to be an institution of excellence that, in partnership with others, plays a significant role in local, national and global efforts towards sustainable development through innovations, and being at the cutting edge of Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development.

Thrust Areas of Work

CEE focuses at enhancing the understanding of sustainable development in formal, non-formal and informal education through its work with schools, higher educational institutions, policy makers and reaching out to youth and the general community. Moreover, the aim is also to integrate education as a key driver for change in demonstrating and advancing sustainable practices in rural and urban communities, and in business and the public sector, and in meeting challenges of global issues such as climate change and biodiversity conservation. CEE also promotes individual and collective positive Handprint actions that are environmentally sound, economically viable and socially beneficial.

Activities / Co-operation with HSF: CEE’s Urban Programmes group that functions from the organization’s office in Pune, in collaboration with HSF has been working on the project, entitled “Green Federalism Project to enhance Urban Environmental Governance through Participatory Budgeting in Pune” since November 2013. The primary focus is to make the city’s development process environment-friendly and sustainable by enhancing the participatory nature of the local urban governance. CEE has been focused on advocacy for the role of citizen’ participation and on evolving techniques for high quality public deliberation. Activities include mobilising/educating citizens, activists, academicians, experts and political leaders about the Participatory Budgeting (PB) process in Pune Municipal Cooperation (PMC). The aim is to contribute to strengthening participatory democracy at the local level.
