In the following, we would like to answer a few frequently asked questions

  • What is the Hanns Seidel Foundation's mission?
The Hanns Seidel Foundation describes its work and mission with the motto "in the service of democracy, peace and development". This equally applies to Bavaria, Germany, Europe and all around the world. The Hanns Seidel Foundation practices political education with the aim of supporting the "democratic and civic education of the German people with a Christian basis".

  • Who was the Hanns Seidel Foundation named after?
Hanns Seidel (1901 - 1961) was one of the co-founders of the CSU in 1945 and was the State Chairman of the party (1955 - 1961). In 1946 he was elected to the Landtag (Bavarian State Parliament) for the first time, was Bavarian Minister of Economics (1947 - 1954) and Prime Minister of Bavaria (1957 - 1960). The foundation was established in 1967. Dr. Hanns Seidel was a visionary strategist and realist. The title "Architect of modern Bavaria" does Hanns Seidel, who was of a humble nature, justice. For the Hanns Seidel Foundation, his name remains an orientation and his Christian-led life an impressive example.
  • How is the Hanns Seidel Foundation financed?
The Hanns Seidel Foundation receives financial contributions from the federal government and from the state of Bavaria as well as from other benefactors. Participant fees and donations make up another small part of financing.

  • What is a "political foundation"?
The term "political foundation" goes back to the creation of foundations close to political parties in Germany. The proximity to a political party, however, should not hide the fact that the foundations are generally open to every citizen and that party politics are not made, but rather that the support of democracy is their goal. Besides the Hanns Seidel Foundation, other well-established political foundations in Germany are the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

  • Does the Hanns Seidel Foundation offer financial assistance for printing costs, class outings, exhibitions, private persons etc.?
The Hanns Seidel Foundation receives appropriated financial means from benefactors in order to fulfil the responsibilities set forth in the statutes. Projects or donation requests from third parties, i.e. other organisations or private persons, can therefore not be supported financially.

  • Where do the Political Adult Education seminars take place?
The Hanns Seidel Foundation has educational centers in Wildbad Kreuth and the Banz Monastery as well as the Conference Center Munich. Furthermore, one-day seminars held all over Bavaria, some as evening events, are also organized by the foundation. The liaison office Berlin practices political education in the capital city and the new German states.
