Guesthouse and B & B Manual Published

“Guesthouse and Bed and Breakfast Manual” Cover and Back.
The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism has officially endorsed the Guesthouse and B & B Manual. The Manual also includes a brief welcome note and introduction by H.E. U Ohn Maung, Minister of Hotel and Tourism.

We believe that local entrepreneurship and community involvement is a growing and important part of the tourism development in Myanmar. Small guesthouses play a significant part in any tourism destination - especially in new destinations and rural areas. Once they are set up, tourists can spend a longer time in destinations and travel further places.

At present small guesthouses and B&Bs are a niche sector, however as tourism grows in Myanmar they will be an essential part of the accommodation mix. They also offer an opportunity of local entrepreneurs and communities to support their local economic development and foster that economic benefits stay within the local area.

The small guesthouse manual is designed to support future small guesthouse and B&B owners in setting up their business. It assists already established small guesthouses to improve their service focusing on how to cater both Myanmar and international tourists. Furthermore, it may be of interest to practitioners and trainers working in the field of guesthouse and B&B set-up, operations and management.

The manual was prepared with the collaboration of MYA/001 Lux Development, International Labour Organization (ILO), MRTI - Myanmar Responsible Tourism Institute (MRTI). It was endorsed by the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism. The contents of this publication are based on the High Impact Tourism Training (HITT) materials which have been adapted to the Myanmar context.

Acknowledgements go to the Authors: Marlo Perry, Gloria Crabolu, Thamilini Guna, Jared Nathan Bissinger, and to Nicole Häusler, Andrea Valentin, Sara Thomas-Parensen, Achim Munz and Paul Penfold for their review and support during the set up of the manual. A big thank you to Chit Thu for developing the cartoons. And particular thanks to Chan Mya Nyein, Aung Soe Min and Anne Goergmeier for supporting the translation, editing and layouting process.

We hope this publication helps to promote a responsible and sustainable tourism approach which involves local entrepreneurs, communities and regional development.
