The group All Burmese Students Democratic Front (ABSDF) has been fighting for federalism since their establishment in the year 1988. For their members, the concept of federalism is not necessarily new, however they are not certain on how to implement it, how to deal with the government, what they can ask for and what different forms of federal unions there are worldwide.

Therefore, the aim of this workshop was not to share general knowledge about federalism per se but to close knowledge gaps, to start discussions about federalism and to find ways for a federal state in Myanmar.

The three-day-long seminar between the 23rd – 25th January 2017 was reflecting on the situation in Myanmar. The workshop on Federalism and Peace at the Green Hill Hotel Yangon with 38 participants was taught by Elisabeth Alber from the Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism (Italy) and Dr. Soren Keil from the Canterbury Christ Church University (United Kingdom).

They delivered theoretical knowledge about federalism, institutions and the constitution and applied the learned on the Myanmar context. Throughout the workshop there were many fruitful discussions among the participants and the experts.
