Good Governance Initiative in Handeni District

In fostering transparency, accountability, and citizen’s engagement, the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) in collaboration with the Civic Education Teachers Association (CETA) is currently implementing a project on Public Expenditure Tracking Systems (PETS). The project builds on an international model that provides training to PETS commitees at the local level. One main focus of the project work of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Tanzania is women empowerment. The approach is to increase women capacity politically and competence in governance in order to improve their performances in decision making organs. Therefore the Hanns Seidel Foundation supports the Training of elected Women Ward Councilors with the Center for Good Governance & Economic Development (CGG&ED).

Both organizations has been offering training services to women councilors together for some years now. In consultation with the Prime Minister’s Office - Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), the Center designed a four day training for 160 women  councilors in Tanzania Mainland who were elected in the 2010 elections from the 28th of November until the 8th of December.  At least five seminars were conducted in five regions: Tanga, Mwanza, Iringa Morogoro and Mtwara. The training also enhanced the capacity of local authorities.

One main focus of the project work of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Tanzania is women empowerment. The approach is to increase women capacity politically and competence in governance in order to improve their performances in decision making organs. Since 2008 the Hanns Seidel Foundation has been conducting Life skill seminars. The aim of these trainings is to enable villagers acquire basic life skills on health and nutrition, as well as awareness creation on issues like HIV AIDS, democracy, constitution, and cultural topics such as the female genital mutilation.
